SEO is the tool that will get you to that all elusive number one spot on the search engine results page.

Ongoing SEO maintenance can help you achieve that.

Ranking for keywords is just half the battle these days.

Changes with Google algorithms mean that the SEO rules are constantly evolving and you need to stay up to date with the latest trends.

We all need to be using SEO so follow these tips on how to improve and maintain your SEO to get your website to the top of the search engine results page.

Update And Upload Content

content is king in writing, indicating content is key for SEO

High quality, relevant content is key to improving your ranking on search engines.

Google in particular takes into account both the quality and freshness of your content so maintaining regular content is an important way to remain relevant.

You need to be writing your content with your audience in mind, whether that be fresh content or whilst updating new content.

New Content

You need to be uploading new content regularly to your site.

One of the easiest ways to do this is blogging.

Blogging allows you to engage with your audience by providing them with newsworthy content that keeps them on your site.

We recommend that you need to be uploading a blog at least once a month for it to have any effect on your SEO, however two blogs or more would be more beneficial.

Blogging is a perfect way to add those all important keywords which are key to boosting your search engine ranking.

Make sure you’re adding more than just text, people these days want to see images or videos.

Your content needs to be aesthetically pleasing, you may have the best written content in the world but if it’s just one block of text people will click away.

Update Existing Content

If you’ve got pages or posts on your site that haven’t been updated in a year go back to them and see if they need updated.

This might be updating images, changing the layout to fit your current style, checking to see if all the links work or changing any outdated information.

Check to see that you are using headings and have an effective meta description as all these count towards your ranking on the search engine result page.

Once you’ve updated the content, share it out again, you may find it reaches more people.

Use Keywords

Keywords are so important to SEO.

You need to be including words in your content that people will be searching for.

However they must be relevant and you can’t just throw random words in if they don’t make sense.

Spamming a keyword in the hope of ranking for it will also do you more harm than good, you need to find a happy medium.

You should be using your keywords in your titles, headings and meta descriptions.

If your content doesn’t have headings and meta descriptions, update them now.

When it comes to titles and meta descriptions make them unique and catchy.

You only have 65 characters in your title to make you stand out from the crowd.

Another tip for new content is to target very specific keywords that have lower competition and use long-tail keywords.

Targeting keywords that are easier to rank for in your area greatly increases your chances of getting to that number one spot on the search results for that particular keyword.

Tools such as SEMRush are great for finding out how different keywords rank in your area, however you can do it from a simple Google search.

Fix Broken Links

Broken links on your website are a huge issue, Google hates them.

Too many broken links or 404s are bad for your website and business.

They lead search engine crawlers and potential customers to a dead end which will more than likely result in them leaving your website.

For the best SEO maintenance we recommend checking your links and fixing the broken ones at least every month.

You will be able to find a list of your 404 pages by logging into Google Search Console or from various other tools.

Backlinks

Link building is very important to SEO but arguably one of the more difficult.

This is because you want sites with a high authority ranking to link back to your site.

Getting these links should be a big part of your SEO strategy as multiple high authority backlinks can boost your position on the search engine results page immensely.

In order to do this you need to be creating good quality content that people want to refer back to and share.

It’s worth looking at people making content in your field and sending them relevant content from your site that they can potentially link back to.

Improve Local SEO

Map with a pinned location

46% of all Google searches are from people on the hunt for information in the local area.

If you are a fixed address business and serve people in the local area, local SEO is vital for online success.

Make sure you have a Google Business Profile so you can appear in Google Maps when people search for a service in your area.

We recommend keeping your Google Profile up to date by posting weekly updates or offers and making sure all your business information is correct. Such as contact information and opening times.

Creating landing pages for your website with specific locations in your area is a great way to boost your local SEO ranking.

Using location specific keywords will also help when people are searching in your area.
